William Wykeham's home at Broughton

If you will recall from our Visit to Winchester College, we mentioned that in the late 1300's "Nothing Happened in England that didn't go thorough William Wykeham". So it is only right, that we are afforded the opportunity to visit his castle at Broughton. This was an elegant experience, and too it confirmed his Motto of "Manners Makyth Man".

And yes, just beyond this protective wall is the Moat of Broughton.

I took several photos through the beautiful hand made glass in these windows overlooking the gardens, fields and in this case the courtyard. Wow What a framing

Pure British corridors, wide and spacious, and the wall covered with a wonderful collection of old art and portraits.

Theresa has a fascinating subject for her composition, as these are the velvet with fur and lace lining that were worn by the descendants of William Wykeham for both the coronation of Queen Elisabeth and King George VI.

So regally elegant.

Garrett is photographed sitting in the Family Coronation Chairs. It seems that the honored guests at the Queen's Coronation are presented with the chair that they actually used at the service. Young Garrett looks quite regal in these chairs of honor.

The Fiennes family is a descendant of the Wykeham's and have enjoyed a long and continuing success in the literature and acting circles of England's Twistleton-Wykeham-Fiennes

It’s arguable that the name Fiennes is one of the most famous in the United Kingdom, topped only by Windsor.  This family line has produced clergy, soldiers, politicians, artists, authors, and more.  Today, the family name is famous across just as many disciplines comprising industrialists, actors, musicians, painters, explorers, and photographers.  This family name that is so well-known today is several hundred years old and has been illustrious ever since James Fiennes first made it famous in 1447, when he was created Baron Saye and Sele.  Fiennes had been a soldier in the Hundred Years’ War, and it is thought that the baronetcy was a reward for his service

We leave Broughton Castle, and its wonders of beauty and the tranquility of the sheep and the cattle grazing in the lush pastures. Too, we have make the full journey of William Wykeham from his start at Winchester College, and on to New College at the University of Oxford. What a terrific influence and legacy he has left to the intellect and the common man of the British Isles. This is all exemplified here at his home The Broughton Castle.
